Fire season and landscape

Fire season typically peaks July through September. Lightning-driven fires in the central Idaho backcountry and fast-moving rangeland fires across the Snake River Plain are the state's two recurring patterns.

The Payette, Boise, Salmon-Challis, and Nez Perce-Clearwater national forests surround the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness, where fires are often managed rather than suppressed. Smoke from those long-duration fires settles into the Salmon, Boise, and Treasure Valley drainages for weeks at a time.
